How To Survive: a Tornado

A tornado can be a devastating natural disaster, but there are steps you can take to increase your chances of survival. Here's what to do during a tornado:

  1. Seek Shelter: If you are indoors, go to a basement or an interior room on the lowest level of the building. Stay away from windows and cover yourself with something to protect yourself from flying debris. If you are outside, find a low-lying area and lie flat, covering your head with your hands.

  2. Listen to Emergency Broadcasts: Keep informed about the storm's location and potential danger by listening to local radio or television broadcasts or following local authorities on social media.

  3. Avoid Mobile Homes: Mobile homes are not safe during tornadoes. If you live in a mobile home, evacuate immediately and find a sturdy building or low-lying area.

  4. Wear Protective Clothing: Wear protective clothing, such as a helmet and sturdy shoes, to protect yourself from flying debris.

  5. Stay Away from Cars: Cars, buses, and trucks offer little protection from tornadoes. If you are caught in a vehicle, leave it immediately and find a low-lying area or a sturdy building.

  6. Be Prepared for Aftermath: After the tornado has passed, be prepared for the aftermath. Stay alert for additional severe weather, and avoid damaged areas to allow first responders to do their job.

  7. Prepare an Emergency Kit: Make sure you have an emergency kit that includes food, water, and first-aid supplies.

By following these tips, you can increase your chances of survival during a tornado. It's important to be prepared by knowing what to do during a tornado, having an emergency plan in place, and regularly practicing tornado drills with your family and coworkers.
